Dyslexia and Irlen Syndrome

There are different possible causes of reading difficulty. So to help a child who is struggling, it is absolutely essential to identify the underlying cause of difficulty and treat that. The wrong help will be a waste of time and lead to further frustration.

Please refer to my article "The Seven Causes Of Reading Difficulty" in order to get an overview of the different possible issues and the symptoms of each.

This article is about Irlen Syndrome. The symptom of Irlen Syndrome is the reader complaining of the text "moving around" on the page.

Have you ever tried to read blue writing on a red background? You will find it is very hard to focus on. The text seems to shimmer as you look at it. People suffering from Irlen Syndrome get the same effect with black text on a white background. It is named after Helen Irlen who first researched it in the 1970s.

The cause of Irlen Syndrome lies in the image processing systems of the eyes and visual cortex.

You might be surprised to hear that your eyes are actually part of your brain. They have migrated out of the skull, but from a neurological point of view they are part of the central nervous system, like the brain itself and your spinal chord.

This means that they do not work like a pair of digital cameras, faithfully transmitting a signal from each rod and cone in each retina. In fact there are 100 million rods and cones in each eye and only 1 million neurons in each optic nerve. So there is a lot of amalgamation of the image while still in the eye.

In particular, the neural circuits are set up to spot variation of intensity across a patch of the retina.

This allows the visual cortex to detect patterns and that is how we make sense of the image.

However, there are moments when this system can be oversensitive to a contrast. For instance, most of us will find blue against red very hard to focus on. And sufferers of Irlen Syndrome find the same with black on white.

The solution is very simple. If a coloured film is laid over the page it changes the contrast. This simple adjustment can usually fix the problem sufficiently. You can experiment to see which tint of film gets the best results. And there are opticians who specialise in this as well.

Home Remedies For Herpes

Herpes is a sexually transmitted disease. Genital Herpes is a common viral infection caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV).

There are two herpes simplex viruses: Herpes Simplex Type 1 (HSV-1) and Herpes Simplex Type 2 (HSV-2).

Herpes is spread through direct contact and it is equally common in males and females.

Causes of herpes:

Genital herpes can be caused by either the herpes simplex virus type 1 or type 2.

HVS type 1 usually infects the lips and when the lips are infected sores called fever blisters or cold sores are present. However, HVS type 1 can infect the genital area and produce sores there.

HVS type 2 is the usual cause of genital herpes. However, it also can infect the mouth during oral sex. A person who has genital herpes can pass or transmit the virus to an uninfected person during sex.

Symptoms of Herpes:

Most people who have herpes do not know because they never have any symptoms, or they do not recognize any symptoms they might have. When symptoms are present, they can be different in each person. Usually the symptoms will appear within two to ten days. The first episode of the symptom of herpes usually last two to three weeks.

Symptoms of a genital herpes outbreak include: itching or burning feeling in the genital or anal area, pain in the legs, buttocks, or genital area, discharge of fluid from the vagina, feeling of pressure in the abdomen, fever, headache, muscle aches, painful or difficult urination, vaginal discharge and swollen glands in the groin area.

Herpes can be spread between outbreaks when there are no sign or symptoms present.

Treatment of Herpes:

The goal of treatment for genital herpes is to provide relief from the discomfort of herpes sores and to reduce the time it takes for an outbreak to heal. Treatment works best if it is started as soon as possible after an outbreak begins.

Home treatment and prevention for herpes:

Most herpes simplex infections that develop on the skin can be managed at home with over-the-counter painkillers and symptomatic relief.

To reduce discomfort from herpes sores:

  1. Take warm sitz baths or wash the area with warm water 3 or 4 times a day.
  2. In between sitz baths, keep the water sores clean and dry.
  3. Using a hair dryer to dry off the sores may be more comfortable than using a towel.
  4. Wear cotton garments to absorb moisture better than those made from synthetic material.

Nonprescription medicines may reduce the pain and fever from genital herpes.

To lower the risk of recurrent outbreaks, reduce or avoid factors that trigger outbreaks such as overexposure to sun, fatigue, irritation of the genital area, and stress.

Ayurvedic tips to avoid outbreaks:

Avoid:

  1. Spicy, sour, fried and junk food, which aggravates vata.
  2. Precipitating factors.
  3. Sleeping in afternoon.
  4. Meat products over fried or deep fried in oil or fat.
  5. Charred and overcooked food.
  6. Consuming opposite food like fish and milk etc.
  7. Physical exertion after a meal and
  8. Taking bath immediately after exercise or heavy outdoor work.

Include honey, pomegranate, and fruits of Emblica officinals, legumes, dates and raisins in the diet diary.

Practice yoga and meditation to control emotional disturbances.

Herbal and supplement remedies for herpes simplex include:

Echinacea (Echinacea purpurea)

Siberian ginseng

Aleo vera

Bee products that contain propolis, a tree resin collected by bees.

Lysine

Zinc

Weight Loss Tips For Teen

Being a teen and being overweight can be a living hell in a society that already is not accepting of obesity, in high school your peers are even harsher. Your extra weight can make you feel like an outsider, un-attractive, and just not happy in your own skin. Trying to lose weight on your own can not only be confusing but dangerous as well, so here are a few tips I put together to help you on your quest of getting in shape and getting healthier.

1. Stop right there and check with your Doctor-You really want to lose weight, check with your doctor- Your doctor will know best, and still being a minor I strongly urge you to meet with your doctor before beginning any weight loss plan. Not only can your doctor suggest how much weight you should lose, they can also refer you to a nutritionist, who can help you set up your own personalized diet. And, depending on your health care plan, you can get reimbursed for joining a group such as Weight Watchers, and even for a gym membership.

But if for whatever reason you cannot or do not want to contact your doctor, here is how to go about losing weight on your own.

-First, check your BMI (Body Mass Index)- I use nhlbisupport.com/bmi. It is really easy, you simply just plug your height and weight into the machine, and you have your BMI. A healthy BMI is anywhere between 18.5 and 24.9. If you are in (or below) the healthy range, I would not suggest losing weight-especially since you are still growing. If you are feeling out of shape try joining an after school sport, and trying not to eat junk food. Not only will eating healthy and exercising make you feel better, it will give you a mood boost.

Side Note: if you are in a healthy weight range and still feel like you are overweight, try confiding in a counselor or another adult you trust. Being obsessed with your weight can very easily turn into a dangerous eating disorder.

Healthy Eating Tips For All!

-Cut out the soda and other sugary drinks, as Americans we consume an average of 1/3 of our daily calories in beverages alone! To lose one pound you need a deficit of 3,500 calories. Just by changing calorie and sugar packed drinks for good ol' water you can lose a pound a week easily!

-While we are on the topic of water, try drinking it iced cold, and MORE than eight 8-oz glasses a day. When you drink ICED cold water, your body needs to warm it up to body temperature to digest it. By doing this, your body is burning calories, and not consuming any since water has no caloric content. Pretty cool, huh?

Most people can lose at least ten pounds just by doing this.

-Try eating 5-6 mini-meals a day- if you are constantly eating, and you never get overly hungry, you will be less likely to crave and indulge in junk food. Try to always keep an apple, a yogurt, or a bag of trail mix with you for when you get hungry.

-Eat from ALL the food groups- ideally, your plate should be ½ vegetables, ¼ carbohydrates, and ¼ protein. Also, try to eat foods high in fiber, they make you feel fuller. Try having oatmeal for breakfast, a sandwich on multi-grain bread for lunch, and rice & beans for dinner. You will feel so satisfied by these foods you will end up eating less without even trying!

-Get up, and Go- Exercise is key to losing weight or maintaining a healthy weight. And, exercise does NOT have to be running. Try walking places with your friends instead of having your parents drive you. Take a kickboxing class, or a salsa class. And if you want to learn exercises on your own time, try getting a Pilates tape, or a book that will teach you resistance training. Most importantly, if you are exercising at a high intensity, three times a week is all you really need. But, make a point to be moderately active every day.

Good luck to all, don't be frustrated, because it really can be easy to get in shape!

Natural Cures For Hypothyroidism - Let Nature Heal You!

This article will discuss natural cures for Hypothyroidism and whether they are effective and get results. I'll also explain what Hypothyroidism is and what some of the causes are. Please always remember to discuss any treatments you are considering with your doctor or health care provider beforehand.

The Thyroid gland, which is located in the neck, produces hormones which regulate metabolism and growth. When the gland doesn't produce enough of these hormones our body's start to slow down and we might produce symptoms such as sensitivity to cold, dizziness, muscle and joint aches and extreme fatigue to name a few. Hypothyroidism is the name given to this common condition but fortunately there is a few different ways to treat it.

The conventional method of treatment for this condition is with a synthetic version of the Thyroid hormone Thyroxine. Thyroxine works well for the majority of people and soon their symptoms dissipate but some people seem unable to tolerate synthetic Thyroxine and suffer side effects. For these people, finding alternative natural methods of treatment is a must.

Natural cures for Hypothyroidism are widely available and come in a variety of different products such as natural Thyroid hormones or homeopathic treatments which aim to heal the root cause of the Hypothyroidism. Natural thyroid hormone treatments are made from Pigs Thyroid glands and usually deliver great results because they contain all of the Thyroid hormones and not just Thyroxine. Homeopathic methods of treating this condition may consist of a detox program alongside a treatment protocol encompassing the healing power of herbs and vitamins.
